An industrial cooling tower is a piece of equipment used to dissipate heat generated in industrial processes, central air conditioning systems, and power plants. Its function is to cool water heated during the process, returning it to a lower temperature so it can be reused in the system.
How it works:
Hot water inlet → water that has absorbed heat from the process (machines, heat exchangers, condensers, etc.) is pumped into the tower.
Distribution → this water is sprayed onto the fill (fill/plastic or wood), which increases the contact area between the water and air.
Water-air contact → Fans force air through the tower. During this contact, part of the water evaporates, removing heat from the remaining water.
Chilled water outlet → the cooled water is collected in the lower reservoir (cold basin) and returned to the industrial process.
Hot, humid air outlet → the air heated by evaporation is released into the atmosphere.
Main components:
Structure (fiberglass, steel, or concrete)
Fill – increases the water/air contact area
Drop eliminators – reduces water loss due to drag
Fans – can be axial or centrifugal
Cold basin – collects the cooled water
Water distribution system – sprinkler nozzles or gutters
Types of towers:
Natural draft: utilizes the difference in density between hot and cold air (tall chimneys).
Mechanical draft (induced or forced): uses fans to move the air.
Open circuit: the water comes into direct contact with the air.
Closed-circuit: water circulates through coils, without direct contact with the air.
